Fracture signs and treatment

Possible signs include worsening pain, swelling, bruising, difficulty bearing weight, reduced motion, deformity, numbness or a wound near the injury. Digital X-rays identify many fractures; CT may be used when more detail is needed.

Symptoms and emergency evaluation

Seek prompt evaluation when pain or swelling is severe, you cannot bear weight, function is limited, deformity is present or numbness and color changes develop.

When a wound needs care

Seek care for bleeding that will not stop with firm pressure, a deep or gaping cut, contamination, possible foreign material, exposed deeper tissue, numbness, reduced movement or a wound on the face, hand, near an eye or across a joint.

Burn Evaluation & Treatment

Initial treatment for thermal, chemical, electrical and friction-related burns.

Burn warning signs and care

Emergency evaluation is important for deep, large, chemical or electrical burns; burns involving the face, hands, feet, genitals or major joints; smoke exposure; or burns in medically vulnerable patients.

What to expect after a crash

The physician may ask about impact direction, seat-belt and airbag use, loss of consciousness and symptom changes. Potential injuries include concussion, neck or back injury, fractures, sprains, wounds, chest or abdominal injury and internal injury.

Testing may include X-ray, CT, ultrasound or laboratory work. Treatment may include pain management, wound repair, immobilization, monitoring, referral or transfer.

Head Injuries & Concussion

Clinical assessment of symptoms that can appear immediately or develop later.

Concussion signs and danger symptoms

Possible symptoms include headache, dizziness, nausea, light sensitivity, blurred vision, fatigue, concentration difficulty, confusion or emotional changes. Loss of consciousness is not required.

Call 911 for worsening headache, repeated vomiting, seizure, slurred speech, weakness, unequal pupils, increasing drowsiness, loss of consciousness or fluid or blood draining from the nose or ears after significant trauma.

CT may be ordered when bleeding, fracture or another serious condition is a concern. Persistent symptoms may require specialty follow-up.

Care and administrative information

Address immediate safety first and call 911 for a life-threatening injury. When possible, report the incident to a supervisor and bring employer or workers' compensation information if readily available.

The care team can document the history, examine the injury, order appropriate testing and provide treatment and discharge instructions.

Age-appropriate emergency evaluation for injuries involving infants, children and teenagers.

When children need urgent evaluation

Children should be evaluated promptly for significant falls, possible fractures, deep wounds, burns, limited limb use or concerning symptoms after a head impact. In infants and young children, inconsolable crying or refusing to nurse or eat after a head injury can be a warning sign.

The physician determines whether imaging, wound care, immobilization, medication, monitoring or transfer is appropriate.

Should I go to urgent care or the emergency room for a broken bone?

Choose emergency care for severe pain, obvious deformity, an open wound near the fracture, numbness, circulation changes, major trauma or concern for multiple injuries.

Can NorthStar treat broken fingers, wrists, arms, ankles and feet?

NorthStar can evaluate suspected fractures, perform medically appropriate imaging, manage pain, immobilize the injury when indicated and recommend orthopedic follow-up or transfer.

Does NorthStar perform emergency orthopedic surgery?

NorthStar provides emergency orthopedic evaluation and stabilization. If surgery is needed, the team can arrange an appropriate transfer or specialty follow-up.

Can I walk in for a sprained ankle or wrist?

Yes. NorthStar accepts walk-ins 24/7. Because fractures and sprains can have similar symptoms, the physician may order an X-ray when clinically appropriate.

Do all cuts need stitches?

No. The appropriate treatment depends on depth, location, contamination, bleeding, tissue damage and time since injury. A clinician may recommend sutures, staples, adhesive, strips, dressing care or another approach.

Is NorthStar a burn center?

NorthStar provides emergency burn evaluation and initial treatment but is not described as a dedicated burn center or burn ICU. Serious burns may require stabilization and transfer.

Should I be checked after a car accident if I feel okay?

Some symptoms emerge later. Seek prompt evaluation after a significant impact or when new pain, dizziness, confusion, weakness, numbness, abdominal pain or breathing difficulty develops.

Can a concussion occur without loss of consciousness?

Yes. Headache, dizziness, nausea, balance problems, confusion, memory difficulty and sensitivity to light or noise can occur without loss of consciousness.

Do you accept workers' compensation?

Acceptance and authorization depend on the plan and employer requirements. Contact NorthStar and the workers' compensation insurer for current administrative information. Do not delay emergency treatment for a serious injury.

What should I bring?

If readily available, bring identification, medication and allergy lists, and relevant employer or accident paperwork. Do not delay emergency care to gather documents.
